CORTLAND BEATS BROCKPORT IN HIGH SCORING AFFAIR

Sophomore Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ONT) scored just 27 seconds into the game for The College at Brockport Hockey team but Cortland answered five seconds later and went on to a 5-4 victory Saturday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Cortland.

After the score was tied at 1-1 32 seconds into the game, Cortland (2-4-1 Overall, 2-4-1 SUNYAC) added three more goals in the next nine minutes and took what looked like a commanding lead into the first intermission.

A double minor penalty to Cortland early in the second period and an additional penalty one minute later led to an extended power play opportunity for Brockport (2-5-1, 1-3-1) and the Golden Eagles capitalized with a pair of power play goals in a span of 17 seconds to cut the lead to 4-3. Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ONT) scored first and Bobby Chayka (Hardwick, NJ) scored his first goal of the season less than 20 seconds later to make it a 4-3 game.

Five minutes later, Jesse Facchini (Mississauga, ONT) tied the score at 4-4 scoring with assists from Rob Hall (Schuamberg, IL) and Kody Vaisanen (Dundalk, ONT).

With 1:21 left in the second period, Cortland scored to regain the lead and took a 5-4 lead into the second intermission.

Each team had scoring chances in the final period but neither could find the back of the net and after nine goals in the first 40 minutes, the goalies for each team held their opponent scoreless for the final 20 minutes of action and the Red Dragons held on for the victory.

Jared Lockhurst
(Caledon, ONT) started for Brockport and was replaced by Aaron Green (Mt. Albert, ONY) after allowing three goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Green played the rest of the game and made 26 saves.
